With Kai almost, finally, back to normal, albeit with still the odd stomach cramp, we really were starting to feel the cabin fever by Thursday. The weather was slightly better (i.e: we could see the sky through the fog up the hill!), so we decided to go on a bit of a hike.
After a morning doing Eric Carle jigsaw puzzles….
…we headed out to look for Pelverata Falls. It is fairly close by, and I read a while ago the falls are quite spectacular after rains. And I figured since it has been raining constantly all week, now would be a good time to see them in full flow.
We found the carpark and set off into the wet and murky wilderness. It got wetter and murkier. I had blisters in my gumboots after 15 minutes…not a good sign! The track was fairly flat for quite a while, before starting to head up.
There were a couple of creek crossings…nothing we couldn’t handle!!
And some fairly wet and swampy forest to navigate…
Then the track headed up in earnest (not really that earnest – but fairly earnest if you’ve only got four-year-old’s legs!)..and then out of the forest along a kind of rocky ledge. From here we could see some big falls, but since I’d read up earlier, I knew those were Slippery Falls, not actually Pelverata Falls.
I asked Kai if he wanted to turn around, but he wanted to go on…so we carefully tracked along the ridge toward the falls we could see. Then Kai got a leech on his finger – and freaked out! We got it off…but it seemed to unsettle him and he decided he wanted to turn around. To be honest, although we didn’t see the big falls, I was quite thankful as the track was getting even steeper and rockier and I wasn’t looking forward to the descent with a tired boy!
We stopped for some water…and to take in the view…
…and made our way back. The return trip (remembering we didn’t quite make the Pelverata Falls) only took us 2 hours. I think I’ll try on my own if the rain keeps up as the actual Pelverata Falls is supposed to be pretty great.
With El Nina predicted to keep the rain up throughout our southern hemisphere summer, I guess i’ll have another chance before we leave!
Not much happenin’ today – more rain. Went to the opticians – new glasses for me – stronger prescription – the joys of being 40! Kai tummy ache worse again – just not sure what to do….and searching for a German recipe as we roll out International Food Night again for 2011!
